Total Factor Productivity of Major Crops in Southern Ethiopia: A Dis-Aggregated Analysis of the Growth Components

(1) Background: Even though agriculture is the backbone of Ethiopian economy, improvements made regarding crop productivity appeared insufficient and had slow progress. Several studies suggest possible ways to identify challenges in sub-sector. Nevertheless, there are gaps empirical literature both knowledge methods. The current study intends factors that affect growth teff, maize, barley, wheat, sorghum crops. (2) Methods: Cobb-Douglass stochastic production function estimated using a panel data set Living Standard Measurement Survey. To address objectives study, parametric estimation with time-varying decay model deterministic components was adopted. (3) Results Discussion: effect inputs on aggregate output positive significant at 1% significance level, implying presence economies scale. Variation inefficiency term explained 46.4% total variance composed error term. average major crops 6.19 per year. This implied technical change increased by 22% better use available technology. (4) Conclusions Policy Implication: findings pinpoint farmers should focus intensification improved agricultural inputs.
